Connecting Nature and Community: The Launch of the Trans Tunisia Trekking Trail

On June 26, a vibrant gathering of seventy enthusiastic individuals took place in Zaghouan to celebrate a significant milestone in Tunisia’s tourism sector: the launch of the first hiking and adventure route under the Trans Tunisia Trekking Trail (4T) program. This event brought together representatives from various associations, ministries, and the tourism industry, all sharing a passion for exploration and adventure.

The occasion was made even more special by the presence of notable figures, including Minister of Tourism Mr. Mohamed Moez Belhassine and Minister of Youth and Sports Mr. Kamel Deguiche, who joined the hiking community for an exciting journey that blended endurance, gastronomy, and excitement. After a picturesque two-hour hike from the Water Temple to Sidi Bougabrine, participants enjoyed a delightful evening around a campfire, tasting local specialties prepared by community members, filling the air with enticing aromas and joyful laughter.

The Trans Tunisia Trekking Trail is more than just a new hiking path; it symbolizes a vision for sustainable tourism in Tunisia. This trail aims to diversify the country’s tourism offerings and establish Tunisia as a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts interested in trekking, hiking, climbing, and mountain biking. Spanning 450 kilometers, the trail is divided into four segments of 251 kilometers each, allowing adventurers to experience stunning landscapes while discovering Tunisia’s rich natural and cultural heritage.

Launched in October 2022, the Trans Tunisia Trekking Trail (4T) project has already supported an impressive 100 sustainable tourism initiatives across the governorates of Jendouba, Kef, Zaghouan, Nabeul, Siliana, Béja, and Cap Bon. This initiative has not only strengthened the capacities of local actors but has also created new jobs, enhanced existing ones, and increased local revenues. Plans are in place for future expansions into the southern regions of the country, including Medenine, Tataouine, and Gabès, with support for an additional 23 tourism initiatives.

Implemented by Leaders International in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism’s Sustainable Tourism Promotion project, the Trans Tunisia Trekking Trail has received backing from the German development agency GIZ and is jointly financed by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union through its “Tounes Wijhetouna” program.
