TANIT Project Launch: A New Era for Sustainable Tourism in Tunisia

On September 27, 2024, Leaders International, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, launched the TANIT project, focused on advancing sustainable tourism across Tunisia. This milestone event convened key stakeholders, including representatives from the Presidency of Government, and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Cultural Affairs, Agriculture, Youth, and Sports. We were also honoured by the presence of our key donor, the European Union, and our implementation partner, Museum Lab.

The TANIT project is designed to strengthen Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in advocating for sustainable and alternative tourism models. By enhancing the capacity of CSOs, TANIT supports the development of a diversified, responsible tourism sector that benefits local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and creates new employment opportunities.

The initiative will focus on eight regions: Jendouba, Kef, Siliana, Béja, Zaghouan,Mednins, Gabès and Tataouine. This regional approach ensures that local voices remain central to shaping a tourism landscape that aligns with community needs and aspirations.

The event underscored the expertise of our Steering Committee members and highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration in promoting sustainable tourism. The critical role of CSOs in advocating for responsible tourism and supporting local communities was emphasised, as members of the Steering Committee (COPIL) reviewed criteria for selecting up to 35 beneficiary associations, with announcements to follow.

The TANIT project represents a significant step forward in advancing environmentally responsible tourism practices in Tunisia. By empowering CSOs and focusing on community-driven initiatives, TANIT aims to establish a sustainable tourism framework that benefits both local residents and visitors. This approach ensures that the growth and development achieved through TANIT are sustainable, equipping local organisations and communities with the skills and resources necessary to maintain progress long after the project concludes.
