Creating New Economic Opportunities for Communities along the Southern Jordan Trail
Who/What is Shiraka?
The project supports the development of income-generating tourism activities along the Jordan trail, from Karak to Aqaba, while improving the livelihoods among community members and households that reside along the trail.
Viable economic opportunities and micro businesses have been identified, developed, and promoted to deliver community-based experiences for inbound tourists.
The Jordanian private sector was also involved in providing necessary technical support to micro and small businesses and initiatives through volunteer mentors. Those experienced mentors, with the help of Leaders International, have helped increase the efficiency, productivity and exports of business initiatives across the trail.
In partnership with the Jordan Trail Association, the project has raised awareness for around 250 local community members, increased operational capacity for dozens of business enterprises and boosted bookings on the trail by 150%.
