As we conclude the Trans Tunisia Trekking Trail project, we reflect on a journey that has reshaped the landscape of sustainable tourism in Tunisia and uplifted local communities. Over the past two years, this initiative has been more than just a development project; it has been a catalyst for change, fostering connections between people and the stunning natural environments they inhabit.
A vision for Sustainble Tourism
The Trans Tunisia Trekking Trail was conceived to highlight Tunisia’s diverse and breathtaking landscapes, stretching from the coastal beauty of Tabarka to the historical richness of Cap Bon and the Dahar region. Our mission was to create a sustainable trekking route that not only attracts adventure seekers but also empowers local communities by providing economic opportunities and promoting cultural heritage.

Our mission was to create a sustainable trekking route that not only attracts adventure seekers but also empowers local communities by providing economic opportunities and promoting cultural heritage.
Remarkable Achievements
- Establishment of 275 KM of Trails: We proudly marked 275 kilometers of hiking trails, establishing 23 routes that cater to all levels of hikers. Each trail is designed to showcase the unique flora, fauna, and cultural landmarks of Tunisia, offering hikers an immersive experience in our natural heritage.
- Strengthening Local Economies: Through partnerships with 119 local suppliers, we fostered economic resilience in the regions we serve. By sourcing services and products locally, we ensured that the economic benefits of tourism are felt directly within communities. This collaboration has not only generated income but has also built a sense of ownership and pride among local stakeholders.
- Investment in Equipment: The project provided 1,355 pieces of equipment valued at 500,000 euros to 100 local entrepreneurs, empowering them to offer high-quality services to tourists. This investment is crucial for enhancing the visitor experience and ensuring that local businesses thrive in a competitive market.
- Empowering 100 Beneficiaries: We are proud to have directly supported 100 individuals through training and resources, enhancing their skills and improving their livelihoods. This empowerment is vital for building sustainable communities where individuals can thrive and contribute to the local economy.
- Legalizing Local Businesses: We facilitated the creation of 9 patents, helping local entrepreneurs navigate the complexities of business registration and compliance. By legalizing their operations, we have laid the groundwork for long-term success and sustainability.
- Educational Workshops: Our commitment to community development included 88 workshops and training sessions. These sessions covered a range of topics, from eco-tourism practices to business management, equipping community members with essential skills to succeed in the tourism sector.
Collaboration at its Core
The success of the Trans Tunisia Trekking Trail is a testament to the power of collaboration. Our partnership with GIZ Tunisie provided vital resources and expertise, while the enthusiasm and commitment of local communities turned vision into reality.
We extend our sincere gratitude to our steering committee members, including representatives from the International Cooperation General Directorate of the Tunisian Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts, the Tunisian National Office of Tourism, and various local organizations. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in our achievements.
A special acknowledgment goes to the European Union through the Tounes Wijhetouna program, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the Tunisian Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts. Their generous support has made this project possible, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in local development.
