From Capacity Building to Global Exposure: The CERA Project’s Transformative Impact on Jordanian MSMEs

From Capacity Building to Global Exposure

The Corporate Entrepreneurship Responsibility Alliance (CERA) project, funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and implemented by Leaders International, is making a notable impact on the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector in Jordan. Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), CERA empowers MSMEs to enhance their operational capacities, integrate green solutions, and elevate production and packaging standards, ensuring they remain competitive in both local and global markets.

A significant aspect of the project is its alliance of large enterprises, who, alongside MSMEs, are engaged in workshops and capacity-building programs. These enterprises not only bring expertise to the table but also gain international exposure through their involvement in global events, contributing to Jordan’s economic sustainability.

To date, the CERA project has supported 89 MSMEs, with the final beneficiary expected to join soon, bringing the total to 90. Each MSME has received tailored technical support that has upgraded their production capacities and management, while financial support has enabled them to adopt sustainable practices, ensuring that their operations remain competitive while embracing environmentally responsible solutions.

Beyond the financial and technical support, the CERA project offers MSMEs a wide range of intangible benefits, including access to quality assurance expertise and planning assistance. These resources have empowered MSMEs to not only improve their current operations but also identify new growth opportunities within their industries.

A key pillar of the CERA project is its alliance of 28 large enterprises, with two more members expected to join soon. These partnerships advance SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), as alliance members actively participate in capacity-building programs focused on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and export strategies, while incorporating innovation in their business practices under SDG 9. Through two dedicated workshops on CSR, alliance members have explored how socially responsible business practices can create long-term value for both their companies and the broader community. The training on export strategies has further prepared these enterprises to explore new markets and expand their global footprint.

CERA’s commitment to promoting Jordanian enterprises on the international stage also reflects SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). Alliance members have gained significant international exposure by attending key global events, including the Annual Investment Meeting in Abu Dhabi 2023 and the Qatar CSR Summit 2024. These summits not only provided Alliance members the opportunity to showcase their leadership in sustainability but also offered valuable CSR-focused workshops, insights into the latest CSR practices, and skill-building sessions. Through these events, alliance members enhanced their understanding of CSR and explored partnerships that will further strengthen Jordan’s economy and reinforce their commitment to responsible business practices.

Looking Ahead

As the CERA project approaches its goal of supporting 90 MSMEs and establishing a complete alliance of 30 large enterprises, it remains committed to supporting SDG-aligned sustainable growth and collaboration. By taking a holistic approach to MSME development, the CERA project ensures that Jordanian enterprises are well-prepared to thrive in an increasingly globalised economy.
